THE LAUNDRY ROOM - KEEPING IT CLEAN

The laundry room has evolved to become a multi-purpose area. Not forgetting the traditional tasks of where to wash and iron clothes, but also as a means of a place for storage, craft work and indoor gardening activities. Furthermore, the laundry room is a transitional area for those re-entering the house after from being outside.

It is important when planning a laundry layout to allow for space to function.

Consider the following:

Plenty of storage and/or shelves for linen, cleaning products and sports equipment.
Ensure overhead cupboards and shelves are not too high and that you are able to reach items without over-stretching.
If space permits, install a fold-down ironing board.
Avoid positioning appliances so their doors when open, do not block or interfere with high traffic access ways.
Include extra work surfaces or if possible oversized countertops, for sorting, folding, ironing and sewing. Ensure the bench is at a suitable height for yourself.
Adequate lighting and good ventilation to reduce humidity, remove heat and fumes.
A drying bar or a retractable clothesline above the floor drain for indoor drip-drying of delicate garments.
A shower stall for post-pool, pet washing or keeping water-sports gear.
Conceal appliances and dirty laundry inside tailored cabinets to make the room appear tidier and easier to utilise the space for other leisure pursuits.

With the right outlook, doing the laundry neednít be a chore anymore.
